On Monday, Nov. 20, the Winston-Salem City Council unanimously approved “Resolution Affirming the City of Winston-Salem’s ‘Ban the Box’ Policy.” As Councilman James Taylor pointed out, the City has informally omitted “the box” in practice, but this resolution made the ‘Ban the Box’ an official city policy.
Several council members spoke in support after the vote. Councilman Derwin Montgomery asked that the City staff report on the hiring practices of vendors used by the City, and Councilwoman Vivian Burke said that the City Manager told her he would raise “ban the box” with those entities that the City invests in financially.
